The Joy of the Covenant: Binah of Yesod

Binah of Yesod is the sixth in the Sefirot Series. The Sefirot are considered in Jewish mysticism to be channels of divinity flowing into the world.

May the Bride and Groom be blessed with the sacred gifts of the Sefirah of Binah (Understanding, Discernment, Insight, Reverence and Joy) and with the sacred gifts of the Sefirah of Yesod (Covenant, Foundation and Bonding).

The Sefirot Series uses abstraction and the interplay of pure, intense color to reflect and inspire the divine flow. This series was strongly inspired by the 20th Century abstract painter and Jewish mystic Mark Rothko.

Binah of Yesod is a meditation on the qualities of Binah within a bonding Covenant of marriage. Greens and yellows, the two colors associated with Binah, interplay joyfully. The solidity of the square composition is a reminder of the weightiness of the marriage vows to always try to understand and revere one another.

Long ago, in medeval Italy, to avoid prying eyes and jealous rivals, smitten Lovers wrote love poems in secret languages. Only their Beloveds held the key to the code, only their Beloveds could unlock the words of love. Calling to mind this secret language of love, the heiroglyphic "love poem" of Nishima Kaplan's playful design is as passionate as your love, as eternal as a Shakespearean sonnet.

Musical Geometrics describes the ecstatic, swirling waltz of the newly wedded couple, as friends and family accompany them with joyous dancing. Based on the work of the mystical Jewish painter Wassily Kandinsky, Musical Geometrics is inspired by the beautiful imagery of the seventh wedding blessing, recited under the chuppah, "may there be heard in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, a sound of gladness, a sound of joy, the sound of the bridegroom and sound of the bride, the sound of rejoicing from bridegrooms at their weddings, and young people at their feasts of song."

Doves of Peace soar above a mystical Jerusalem where Day and Night exist in perfect balance and Loving Couples wander hand-in-hand along twin paths towards a star-lit Ocean and a Sun-drenched City perched atop gentle hills. Crowning this paradise are two interlocked Wedding Rings, symbolizing your union in marriage, and a Scroll reading "I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine" — a quote from the Song of Songs. Below, twin shofars proclaim the Hebrew word "Chai" (life) while candles, wine and challah stand ready as symbols of the Jewish home you have pledged to create.

Ocean Dawn represents the aspects of marriage that are forever renewing themselves. The ever-evolving dance of ocean and sky, woman and man, wife and husband.

As with your love for each other, a riverbed is always changing, always deepening, always flowing. Hand in hand, bathed by the crystal clear water, the riverbed is yours and yours alone to explore. With each step, it offers up a chance discovery: A shiny pebble, a flash of silver, a moment of shared laughter.

The third in Nishima’s "Poetics" series, Riverbed is inspired by the simplicity and beauty of Asian art fused with Nishima’s playful sense of form and color. As carefully composed and balanced as a verse of Haiku poetry. Classic, modern, primal, earthy. Riverbed will grow and change with you.

This mixed media "Poetics" collage is constructed from handmade paper that is torn, cut, applied and layered onto a large, colorful watercolor painting. The process is intensely meditative for the artist. She begins with only an idea in mind. No sketches of the artwork are done prior to beginning. Sudden inspirations, "accidents" and the natural beauty of the paper and the watercolor are allowed to "create" the artwork, using the artist as the vessel of expression. Spontaneous, creative, mystical: the words used to describe the process of creating this "Poetics" ketubah also describe the people who love it.

Metallic Ink

I can write your Ketubah in any color ink. If you would like for me to use metallic ink, an additional fee of $200.00 will apply. The reason for this is that I have to write the text twice... a very time-consuming process. But the result is beautiful!

Note: Metallic ink is required for most Rothko-inspired images and other designs in which the text sits on top of intense, saturated colors.
