THE CHUPPAH

The Jewish wedding canopy or "Chuppah", under which the bridal couple is married, is traditionally made of cloth connected to four poles. However, there are no rules about what type of fabric or decoration the chuppah should have. Your interfaith wedding chuppah could be made of African kente cloth, Indian saris, South American blankets, a Jewish tallit (prayer shawl), Chinese silk, or American heirloom quilts. The chuppah could be decorated with flowers and/or good luck charms from your family’s homeland.

The Chuppah is your first "home" and represents the shelter of peace over your marriage. The chuppah might be anchored to the floor on four sturdy poles or four of your attendants (bridesmaids and ushers, or perhaps siblings) can hold the poles of the chuppah during the ceremony. Generally, the bride and groom stand under the chuppah with the rabbi and their parents stand to the side of the chuppah.
