Artist Statement for "Blessing Hands" Ketubah

Artist: Nishima Kaplan

Original media: Watercolor on paper

Media ~ Oil paint, sea glass, semi-precious gems, clay, paper, pastel, ink, gold paint and wood-burning on oak board.

Traditional Jewish symbols of blessing abound in this truly un-traditional work of art by Nishima Kaplan.

At the top center, a pair of hands extend the Blessings of the High Priest ~Cohen Ha-Gadol~ over your marriage, flanked by two woodburned Hamsas; ancient Sephardic amulets known to draw positive energy, happiness, riches and health into your home. At the bottom of the ketubah, two beautifully stylized painted-clay hands partake in the ring ceremony ~ joining your lives together as one.

Placed around the borders and texts are semiprecious gems and sea glass, chosen by Nishima for their beauty and healing colors.
